FBI Warns Delete These 'Smishing' Texts Now: This Free App Can Help

The FBI issued a nationwide warning about a new onslaught of "smishing" attacks on iPhones and Android via SMS (Short Message Service). What you need to know and a free app that can help keep you safe.

Urgent FBI warning against new "smishing" on iPhone and Android users

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is warning Americans that a new wave of "smishing" attacks is occurring nationwide. The FBI urges anyone receiving suspicious text messages to delete them immediately.

Anyone who receives a suspicious text or email can file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov. When you file, include the phone number from where the text originated and the website listed within the text.

Active scams

A common scam circulating is bogus parking violation text messages that inform the recipient with a "final reminder" that these unpaid parking invoices will incur an additional $35 fine per day.

Numerous US cities have warned residents about these scam messages, including Annapolis, Boston, Greenwich, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, Charlotte, San Diego, San Francisco, New York, and many others.

Another scam is a warning in the form of a fake but authentic-looking E-ZPass, EZDriveMa, NC Quick Pass, or other road toll collection service claiming the recipient owes unpaid tolls.

Authorities, such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and several state motor vehicle agencies and departments of transportation, have issued statements to inform consumers that services such as E-ZPass and NC Quick Pass never text customers for payment.

What is "smishing?"

The term "smishing" derives from a combination of the words "SMS" and "phishing" and refers to tactics that are used to deceive and manipulate individuals into providing their confidential information.

Such tactics typically involve a scammer impersonating a legitimate sender or organization (spoofing) and using a text (SMS) message to encourage the recipient to click a malicious link or give up sensitive information.

Scammers will often impersonate state, government, or other trusted organizations. Usually, the goal is to get the individual to input passwords, bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other private information the scammer can exploit.

Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, and one of the biggest threats today is smishing—a phishing attack carried out via SMS. Protecting yourself from these threats is crucial, and that’s where the free app Connect SMS Home Screen comes in.
