However, like many criminals, the creator of the Magic Cat scamming software made a series of operational security (opsec) mistakes, which ultimately allowed security researchers and investigative journalists to uncover the identity of this individual, who went by the handle Darcula, TechCrunch reported.
Mastermind identified
Earlier this year, the Oslo-based security firm Menomic, along with Norwegian Media, identified Yucheng C, also known as Darcula, a 24-year-old Chinese national, as the mastermind behind the Magic Cat scamming software.
According to reports, Darcula sold his scamming software to hundreds of scammers, who used Magic Cat to launch their own SMS text message scam campaigns.
Unfortunately, once Yucheng C was identified, like his name, Darcula went dark, leaving his fellow scamming customers without updates.
Worse, in his absence, a new scam operation has emerged, one that has already significantly outpaced Magic Cat, which goes by the name of Magic Mouse. So far, Magic Mouse has stolen details from at least 650,000 credit cards per month.
