Top 10 Most Annoying Group Texting Habits

Group texts can be a super-fun virtual get-together! However, one who doesn't understand group chat etiquette can annoy everyone and ruin the good vibes. Here's what NOT to do, and check out this free group text app!

Don’t Be That Person!

Don't be that annoying, party-pooper person in a group text that spoils the fun for everyone. Learn group text etiquette. Here are seven annoying habits to avoid.

10. Don't start a conversation at 8 PM or later on weeknights

Many people are night owls on the weekend, but during weekdays, there are obligations like jobs, school, and children. By 8 PM Sunday through Thursday, most people are trying to wind down and get a good night's rest. Save the group text chats for the late afternoon or early evening. Better yet, plan your time so everyone can attend and RSVP.

9. Invite people to the group chat who know each other

In most instances, you only want to invite people into the group who already know each other. Getting an unknown number can be weird, awkward, or concerning. At the very least, if you're bringing in someone new, introduce them to the others at the onset. And only bring in a stranger if you are planning an event that everyone will attend.

8. Don't be hyperactive

Don't jabber mindlessly with your text. Contribute something meaningful to the conversation. Needless OMGs or emojis to everything that gets said makes everyone's phone buzz more than necessary – and that's really annoying. Don't fire off multiple short sentences, either. Put your thoughts in a single text.

7. Don't hog or rush the conversation

Don't be the one doing all the talking or trying to dominate the conversation. There is no "i" in group. Let everyone participate. Also, don't rush the conversation because you want to switch gears. Ensure everyone has contributed to the topic before moving on to something else.

6. Engage in conversation

Sure, at an in-person party, you can sometimes be a wallflower or someone who listens more than talks. But you can't do that in a group text. You are invited because people want you to participate. You don't have to do all the talking but don't stay silent 80% of the time.

5. Don't talk to only one person

It's a group text, which means you should be conversing with everyone and acknowledging what each person says so that they feel heard. Don't focus your conversation on one person. If you have something separate you need to say to an individual, take your conversation into a private chat and spare the rest of the group.

4. Stay on topic

Ideally, group texts should have a purpose. Sharing a topic, new news that everyone will be interested in, making plans, sharing photos or videos, etc. Then, focus on staying on topic. Conversations are rapid and sporadic with group texts, so staying on topic keeps things from devolving into babble and wasting everyone's time.

3. If you need to leave the conversation, announce it

Don't just disappear from a group text like a ghost. If you have to leave the conversation, let everyone know so they don't expect a response from you anymore.

2. Put your phone on silent mode

This etiquette is not for others in the group but for anyone around you. Your phone going "ding-ding-ding" constantly will drive other people absolutely batty (and perhaps yourself included). Mute your phone while the group text is occurring.

1. Allow or plan an end to the conversation

Don't drag a group text on and on for no reason. That might make people less eager to do it again. Don't be that person who keeps texting on and on. Allow things to end or bring it to a close when things are winding down or the goal has been met. You may even want to set a time beforehand so everyone knows there's a time limit, like 30 minutes or an hour.
